Charleston County hotels saw 3 percent dip in occupancy in August versus year ago when PGA Championship filled rooms
Last August, the PGA Championship teed off on Kiawah Island and visitors flocked to the Charleston area, swelling hotels with impressive occupancy rates during the sultry month.
This year, Charleston County hotels reported a 3 percent decrease in occupancy in August compared to the same month a year ago as overall hotel occupancy came in at 72.2 percent, according to the Office of Tourism Analysis at the College of Charleston.
“This performance is very much in line with expectations, as last August we enjoyed the significant impact of the PGA Championship,” said Perrin Lawson, deputy director of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
About 3,800 fewer room nights were sold compared to last August.
Revenue per available room dropped 2.8 percent to $90.48 while the average daily room rate jumped 0.8 percent to $125.03.
Year to date, the county enjoyed a 0.4 percent increase in hotel occupancy, a 4.5 percent jump in average daily room rate and a 4.9 percent rise in revenue per available room over 2012.
Peninsular Charleston led all submarkets in overall occupancy with 80.5 percent of its rooms filled, up 0.7 percent over August last year. The average daily room rate jumped 1.7 percent to $162.71, representing a year-over-year increase for 39 of the past 41 months.
West Ashley hotels reported 79.2 percent occupancy, down 0.2 percent. North Charleston showed 64.9 percent occupancy, down 5.9 percent, while East Cooper recorded 69 percent of its rooms filled, down 5.4 percent.
Charleston County reported 15,351 hotel rooms in August, about 300 more than last year after a couple of new hotels opened earlier this year.
More than 1,800 new rooms will be added over the next few years as new hotel projects on peninsular Charleston and Mount Pleasant lead a wave to capitalize on Charleston’s national tourism accolades from Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines.
