HANAHAN – Clemson, playing in its first women’s college golf tournament, shot a 6-under-par score of 282 Monday to take a six-stroke lead into the final round of the Cougar Classic being played at Yeamans Hall Club.
With three of its five players in the top 10, the Tigers surged past first-round leader Mississippi State. Clemson’s 36-hole total is 567, 9 under par. Mississippi State shot 291 and is at 573. Host College of Charleston posted its second-best ever single round score, 3-under 285, and is tied with N.C. State for third at 2-under 576.
South Carolina, tied for second with Clemson after the opening round, struggled to a 10-over-par 298 and is in seventh place at 583. Coastal Carolina is at 608, Furman is at 610 and Charleston Southern is at 653.
Clemson’s Sloan Shanahan, a freshman, is tied with Mississippi State’s Ally McDonald for first individually at 138. Tiger freshman Ashlan Ramsey, the world’s No. 1-ranked female amateur, is in a four-way tie for third at 141 with South Carolina senior Samantha Swinehart, College of Charleston sophomore Morgan Webber and Florida’s Maria Torres.
Cougars sophomore Mary Chandler Bryan is part of a seven-player tie for ninth at 143 that also includes Clemson redshirt freshman Lauren Salazar. Katelyn Dambaugh, a Goose Creek native who is a freshman at South Carolina, struggled with a 75 Monday and is at 147.
A 9 a.m. shotgun start is planned for Tuesday’s final round.
