College of Charleston student killed in accident Friday
Members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the College of Charleston were in mourning Saturday after one of their brothers was killed in a fatal accident near Manning.
Franklin Barker West, 18, of Alexandria, Va., was one of five students riding in a car that was involved in the accident around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
West was the only fatality.
Two of the people in the car were taken to the intensive care unit at the Palmetto Health Richland hospital in Columbia, the school said Saturday. Their names and conditions were not available.
Two other students were not severely harmed, College of Charleston spokesman Mike Robertson said.
All are members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. They apparently were on their way to the University of Virginia for a visit, Robertson said.
Details of accident were unclear and attempts to get incident report information from the S.C. Highway Patrol were unsuccessful Saturday.
West was listed as a sophomore at the school.
The outside of the fraternity house on Wentworth Street was decorated in flowers Saturday. One man who answered the door said alumni had come back from the West and Northeast in a show of recognition and brotherhood. He declined to identify himself.
Grief counselors from the school were being made available, Robertson said.
