Bishop England and Timberland had won three Class AA state championships between them coming into the season.

That just didn’t seem to impress the Hanahan Hawks.

For the second straight week, the Hawks hammered a perennial Class AA power, this time beating two-time defending Division II-AA state champion Bishop England, 35-0, Friday night before a standing room only crowd at Jack Cantey Field.

The Hawks (2-0) dismantled Timberland, 41-0, in the season opener a week ago and now have outscored their first two opponents, 76-0. Timberland captured the Division I-AA title in 2011. Hanahan plays at the Class AAA level.

Despite its lopsided victory, Hanahan coach Charlie Patterson felt like Friday night’s win over Bishop England (0-2) was a step in the wrong direction for the Hawks.

“We were good defensively, but we were very sloppy on offense,” Patterson said. “We put the ball on the ground too many times, we couldn’t handle snaps and we just didn’t execute very well. I’m not going to stand here and complain about a 35-point win, because I’m happy we won, but we’ve got to play better.”

Hanahan running back Quan Wade led the Hawks’ offense with 102 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s a horse,” Patterson said. “I thought he ran hard again tonight.”

The Hawks defense dominated the line of scrimmage, allowing just 147 yards of total offense and forcing four turnovers. Take away a 61-yard run by Bishop England running back Nick Shiver in the fourth quarter and the Bishops mustered just 86 yards of offense. The Hawks’ defense also scored twice on fumble returns for TDs in the third quarter.

“That’s a very good football team and they’ve got a great defense,” said Bishop England coach John Cantey. “We’ve got a lot of inexperienced players out there trying their best. We’ve got to coach ‘em up and learn from our mistakes.”

Trailing 21-0 going into the second half, the Bishops had a nice drive going before Hanahan’s Marlon Washington scooped up a loose ball and raced 66 yards for a TD to give the Hawks a 28-0 lead.
