COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- Authorities say a police officer was wounded just south of Atlanta in a shootout with a suspect. The officer’s wound is not expected to be life-threatening.
Fulton County police Cpl. Kay Lester tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the suspect was killed in the gunfire.
Lester said the officer was alert when taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta “and is going to be OK.” She said the bullet-resistant vest he was wearing saved his life.
Lester said the shooting happened Thursday morning on White City Road near College Park, just inside the Interstate 285 perimeter.
CBS Atlanta reports that the officer is a member of a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team.
Lester said the officer was on patrol when he encountered a suspicious person shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday.
