VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A runner died after collapsing during the Virginia Beach Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon.
Virginia Beach EMS spokesman Ed Brazle tells the Virginian-Pilot that early in Sunday’s race, a police officer was flagged down by runners when someone collapsed. The officer performed CPR until emergency crews arrived to take him to the hospital.
Dr. P.Z. Pearce, the race’s medical director, confirmed in an email that the runner died at the hospital Sunday afternoon. The runner’s name was not released.
The Virginia Beach event has had three others deaths in its history — in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
