Dorchester County sheriff’s captain dies while hunting

Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office Capt. James Nettles

A Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office captain died while hunting in a Georgetown County forest this afternoon.

The coroner’s office identified him as James Nettles, 44, according to multiple news sources including the Georgetown Times.

Nettles was reported missing around Ten Acre Road near Andrews about 11:30 a.m. His body was found in a wooded area about 4 p.m.

Nettles was not shot, and foul play is not suspected. Officials believe he may have died of cardiac issues, according to the Times.

An autopsy is set for Tuesday morning at Medical University Hospital.

Nettles had been with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office for a number of years, and his sudden death hit the department hard. A spokesman declined immediate comment Monday.
