If you’re in the market for big appliances, a new lawn mower or just about any other big, bulky item, Labor Day weekend is a good time to shop for it. Have a pickup truck on standby this weekend and hit up these deals while they last.

Gas grills are something we tend to associate with summer cookouts, but I think most locals will agree that grilling out is practically a year-round affair in Charleston. Plus, buying one off-season could knock a decent amount off the price tag. Find high-end models for 20 percent off at Lowe’s this week, with most marked-down prices ranging from $139-$400. The deals are valid through Sept. 9.

Mattresses are a weighty expense for everyone, and if you’ve been putting off the purchase, now may be the best time. Around Labor Day, you’ll be able to find high-quality mattresses that you can actually afford. Check out the selection on sale for 50 percent to 60 percent off at Sears this week. Some qualify for free delivery and with some styles, they’ll even throw in a free box spring.

Outdoor gear such as camping accessories, bicycles and other recreational equipment will be marked down this week. Kmart has Schwinn bikes on sale for $99-$160, marked down from $130-$200. Kmart is also advertising impressive deals on camping gear, with a six-person tent going for about $70. For name-brand models, check the sales on REI.com. The Base Camp Four Person tent is marked down from $369 to $269.

Appliances are a rare purchase, but if you’re upgrading yours, shop this week’s sales and you could save at least $100. At Home Depot, appliances are 10 percent off or more, most qualify for free delivery and there’s no interest fee for items that are paid off in six months. H.H. Gregg has an impressive sale as well, with markdowns ranging from 25 percent to 30 percent.

Electronics, especially televisions, are a smart purchase this week. Wal-Mart is a go-to spot for cheap TVs, but H.H. Gregg appears to be giving the mega-store a run for its money with its Labor Day specials this year.

A 32-inch LCD TV by Seiki is on sale for $200 at H.H. Gregg, which saves you about $45. If you have a little more to spend, there’s a package deal on the website for a 51-inch plasma, high-definition TV and a free Blu-ray player for $498, which saves you about $130. Plus, the store offers short-term financing.

Lawn mowers are a necessity throughout the year for homeowners, but Labor Day is one of the few times of year they go on sale. You’ll only see gas-powered models advertised in Lowe’s circular this week, but the store actually has even better prices on electric mowers, like the 13-amp Greenworks push mower for $189.
