Work apparently has started on a new water taxi stop at Waterfront Park, serving downtown tourist areas and the City Market.
Construction crews and a crane are doing work on the pier, which is in front of the S.C. State Ports Authority headquarters on Concord Street.
Last year, city officials said they were seeking bids to construct a 50-foot floating dock off the concrete pier at Waterfront Park to act as a taxi tie-up.
The dock is expected to create a new stop on the peninsula for Charleston Water Taxi, which shuttles passengers between the city’s Maritime Center near the S.C. Aquarium and the Charleston Harbor Resort in Mount Pleasant.
A representative of the privately owned company was not immediately available for comment this morning.
Barbara Vaughn, a spokeswoman for the city, said she could not immediately confirm the details this morning about the new dock.
Plans for a new taxi stand for Waterfront Park has been floated for years.
