Walterboro mother charged after leaving baby in Walmart shopping cart

A Department of Social Services official was called to a Wal-Mart store in Walterboro on Tuesday afternoon after a 25-year-old woman forgot her baby in a shopping cart, police said.

Walterboro police were called to the Wal-Mart store at 2110 Bells Highway concerning a complaint of child endangerment, an incident report states.

Customers found the baby strapped to a car seat in a shopping cart with no parent in sight, police said.

Authorities notified the child’s family through a phone number that was listed on the bottom of the car seat, the report states.

A DSS case worker took custody of the child and released her to a relative, police said.

Murdaugh was awaiting a court hearing after being arrested May 24 and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a telephone and first-degree assault and battery, according to Colleton County court records.
