A patient at a West Ashley mental health center was accused of stabbing two employees at the facility after growing agitated while waiting for a shot to treat her paranoid schizophrenia, authorities said.
Charlene Johnson, 49, of Alfred Road in Hollywood, is charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. She is being held at the Charleston County jail.
Police were called to Charleston Mental Health, 2100 Charlie Hall Blvd., shortly before 6 p.m. Monday to investigate reports of an assault.
Workers told them Johnson’s daughter had dropped her off to get her monthly shot. While sitting in an exam room, Johnson suddenly jumped to her feet with a sharp object in her hand and screamed, according to an incident report.
Johnson stabbed one worker in the upper left shoulder, then sliced the fingers of a second worker who came to her colleague’s aid, police said. The second worker was stabbed in the shoulder and legs as she tried to control Johnson, the report stated.
Johnson ran off with the sharp object, flagged down a passing car and rode off as another worker chased her outside, police said.
Charleston County sheriff’s deputies located Johnson at her Hollywood home and helped Charleston police take her into custody. Investigators did not locate the object used in the stabbing, police said.
When asked if she had assaulted workers at the mental health center, Johnson said, “Yes, I stabbed them ... both of them, and I would do it again!” according to a police report.
Once handcuffed, the report said, Johnson told officers, “I am the princess ... I am the realtor, I am the wife of the president, and they are not giving me AIDS!”
