Pedestrian hit by car in Mount Pleasant was from Columbia area

A woman died Saturday night after she was hit by a car in Mount Pleasant.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified her as Patricia West, 59, of the Columbia area. She was in the area visiting family.

She was hit at 10:18 p.m. on U.S. Highway 17 near Park West Boulevard, according to Mount Pleasant police. She was pronounced dead from blunt-force trauma at Roper Mount Pleasant Hospital, according to the coroner’s office.

The driver told police he was in the middle lane of U.S. 17 when his left mirror hit a woman, according to an incident report. He told investigators he did not see the woman in the road and believes she was crossing from the northbound side of the street. He turned the car around to see what he had hit, according to police.
