Clemson opens No. 8 in the Associated Press poll; Georgia 5th, Gamecocks 6th

CLEMSON – It’ll be No. 5 Georgia at No. 8 Clemson to help ring in the college football season, in figures decided both by the coaches in USA Today’s poll as well as by the writers in Saturday’s release of the Associated Press rankings.

Virginia Tech, Miami, Georgia Tech and North Carolina are in the receiving votes portion.

The top five reads Alabama, Ohio State (a distant second), Oregon, Stanford and the Bulldogs.

The highest Clemson has ever opened is fourth, in 1984 via the AP rankings and in 1988 by both major polls.

This is the eighth year in its history Clemson opens in the AP top 10.
