A Berkeley County detention officer was arrested more than a year after investigators say he struck a restrained inmate at a Moncks Corner jail.
Billy Wade Biering, 49, of Ridgeville, was charged with third degree assault and battery by the State Law Enforcement Division. Biering hit a restrained inmate at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center with a closed fist several times on May 12, 2012, according to an affidavit.
He was booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, according to SLED. Biering was released after a judge set his bail on Tuesday, according to court records. He was released on a $1,092 personal recognizance bail.
Biering’s is expected in court on Sept. 12. Information about his employment status with Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Moon said Biering is a former employee and would not comment further.
