ORANGEBURG — A monument honoring three South Carolina State University students killed in a 1968 civil rights protest has been corrected after more than 40 years.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports crews came to the monument Friday and fixed the middle initial in Delano H. Middleton’s name. He had been listed as Delano B. Middleton since the monument was put up in 1969.
Middleton’s family isn’t sure how the mistake happened. One theory is the wrong initial was pulled from Middleton’s nickname, “Bump.”
Orangeburg Mayor Paul Miller says the city covered the roughly $500 cost because it was the right thing to do.
Middleton and two other students were shot and killed by state troopers during a February 1968 campus protest that became known as the Orangeburg Massacre.
