Survive and advance is the mantra of the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Country Club of Charleston. And Tuesday was a major battle in that war. Shoot 150 or better and you assured yourself of at least an opportunity to become one of the 64 golfers to reach the match play portion of the tournament that begins at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

U.S. Women’s Amateur

WHEN: Today-Sunday

WHERE: Country Club of Charleston

WHAT: An international field of 156 golfers began play Monday. The top 64 after Tuesday’s round advanced to match play which begins today and concludes Sunday.

Tee times: Matches begin at 9:30 a.m.

PARKING: No parking at the Country Club. Public parking is available at the vacant space located at Folly Road and Albemarle Road, with shuttles running every 15 minutes from 5:15 a.m. until 9 p.m.

TV: The Golf Channel (3-5 p.m. today; 4-6 p.m. Thursday-Sunday)

Katelyn Dambaugh of Goose Creek shot 146 thanks to a 1-over-par 72 and advanced. So did Lauren Stephenson of Lexington, who also shot 146. Dawn Woodard of Greer, the current Carolinas Women’s Player of the Year, managed to squeeze in with a 149.

Ten-year-old Lucy Li of Redwood Shores, Calif., the youngest player ever to compete in the Women’s Amateur, made a valiant run with a second-round 70, but came up two shots short a playoff, finishing at 152. Her 12-shot turnaround was the best in the field.

Advancing in record fashion was 14-year-old Yumi Matsubara of Osaka, Japan. Matsubara set a Women’s Amateur Championship record with Tuesday’s 7-under 64 and tied the 36-hole tournament record with her total of 135. Matsubara did not make a bogey and carded seven birdies.

This is her second trip to the United States. She traveled to Oakland, Calif., in July and qualified at the same site with Li. Speaking through translator June Nagashima of the Japan Golf Association, Matsubara said the 64 was her best-ever score. She twice previously had 7-under-par rounds, both 65s.

“I wasn’t even thinking about a championship record. It feels very good,” Matsubara said.

First-round leader Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu, Hawaii, Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., and Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., tied for second at 140.

There was a five-way playoff for the final four spots between players who shot 150. Laura Wearn of Charlotte, Lydia Choi of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Saki Ilda of Gilbert, Ariz., survived the first playoff hole, No. 10, with pars. Bianca Maria Fabrizio of Italy advanced with a bogey on the par-4 11th. The unfortunate non-survivor was Jennifer Yang of Korea.

Of the eight South Carolina golfers who qualified, five failed to advance into match play. McKenzie Talbert of North Augusta shot 153, Kelli Murphy of Elgin was at 157, Lily Bartell of Hilton Head finished at 159, and Anne Marie Covar and Katy Funk of Spartanburg both shot 160.

Dambaugh was on target toward making match play for most of Tuesday’s round, but a bogey on the par-3 sixth (her 15th hole of the day) erased the comfort level as she dropped back to 5-over for the tournament.

The anxiety level went up another notch on the par-5 ninth, Dambaugh’s finishing hole. Needing a par, Dambaugh hit a monster drive and then decided to play it safe on her second shot. She dropped back from her normal 3-wood to a hybrid club and promptly hit a fat shot that rolled into the right rough. But a perfect 9-iron third shot stopped three feet away for an easy birdie and gave her some breathing room.

“My main goal was to get into match play,” Dambaugh said. “Now I’ll take it one match at a time.”

Dambaugh said she continued to struggle with her putting but felt she was rolling the ball well.

“I was actually feeling really good,” Dambaugh said. “I only missed two greens but no birdie putts would fall. Tomorrow I’ll do a little better. The greens are so fast. They’re perfect. Perfect.”

The second round was a little less comfortable for Woodard, 38, who struggled to a 77 after an opening-round 72. Woodard was the only mid-amateur to qualify for the event (reigning and four-time Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Fla., was exempt and also advanced into match play).

“It’s not disappointing because I played great golf yesterday,” Woodard said. “The conditions are great. It’s not as windy, but it’s still a very tough golf course. You just have to take what it gives you.

“My misses today were in spots that made it more difficult to save par. As far as the way I played, I’m almost as happy as I was yesterday. It was just that fine line of being on the wrong side a couple of times…One little mistake can add up quickly. I’m very happy with the way I played two rounds of golf.”
