Charleston County sheriff’s deputies on Saturday arrested a man accused of beating a 10-year-old girl and leaving her, a woman and two other children on the side of the road.
Michael Butler, 38 of Line Street in Charleston, is charged with second degree assault and battery and neglect of a child, jail records show.
A 31-year-old Charleston woman and three children flagged down deputies in Hollywood at the corner of Highway 17 and Davidson Road on Friday, an incident report states.
The woman told deputies that one of the children had been assaulted by her father. Deputies identified Butler as that man.
Butler had been drinking and grew angry with the children as they sat in the back seat of a vehicle they were riding in, the report states.
Butler jumped to the back seat while the vehicle was still in motion and began hitting one of the children in the face and on the arms, deputies said.
He stepped out of the vehicle as it came to a stop and pushed the woman and children out before driving away, according to the report.
Deputies observed swelling to the beaten child’s face. She also had a bloody nose, deputies said.
Doctors at St. Francis Hospital reported that the child may have had a broken nose and a fractured jaw.
Butler was held at the Charleston County jail in lieu of a $100,000 bail.
