The massive Nexton residential and commercial development near Summerville soon will have its first restaurant.
Raleigh-based Carolina Ale House has signed a purchase agreement to buy a site in the first phase of the MeadWestvaco Corp. development.
It’s expected to break ground in October and open next spring.
The restaurant will front U.S. Highway 17A.
The physical address was not given.
Changing of the guard
Dukes Bar-B-Que in Summerville has not only changed owners, but its name as well.
The restaurant at 100 Iris St. off U.S. Highway 78 west of Flowertown is now called Ole South Bar-B-Q. The menu will remain unchanged.
The new owners are Thomas B. Toney and his wife, Iryna. They succeed Lillian Dukes Johnson, who retired from the barbecue restaurant business in July.
Toney, a real estate broker and homebuilder, built the restaurant in 2011 for Johnson and her husband.
The restaurant was established in 1956 by the late Milton Dukes. After he died in 2003, his widow, the former Lillian McManus, continued the business at different locations in Summerville, North Charleston and Berkeley County.
The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday each week.

Head to Tail Day Spa and Inn recently opened at 1233 Camp Road in an 1,800-square-foot shop, according to co-owner Heather Heath. The manager and co-owner is her husband’s uncle, Pat Heath.
Seaside Farms shopping center in Mount Pleasant has a new barbershop.
Jeff’s Barbering recently opened at 1971 Riviera Drive. The owner of the 1,200-square-foot shop is Jeff Richard.
During August, the Kickin’ Chicken local restaurant chain is raising money for two Charleston charities as part of a back-to-school promotion.
Visit any of five Charleston area restaurants, donate a dollar and get your name on your choice of a Clemson or South Carolina chicken head. The funds will go to Teachers’ Supply Closet and Hootie’s Homegrown Round Up Back to School Basics to provide supplies to students and teachers in high-poverty schools.
To keep with the friendly in-state rivalry, the restaurants also will be competing with each other; the one that raises the most money will have its donation matched by the restaurant owners.
“We are committed to our customers and community and feel that we cannot only raise much-needed funds for these organizations, but we can also help educate our guests and staff about the important work these organizations do,” said Chip Roberts, co-founder of The Kickin’ Chicken.
