GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The case of a Landrum mother charged with homicide by child neglect after a falling dresser killed her 2-year-old son is going to the grand jury.
Greenville County Sheriff’s investigator Eric Whaley said at Tuesday’s preliminary hearing that 27-year-old Margie Shaver was home watching TV in March when Chandler Shaver was crushed.
Whaley testified the mobile home was filthy, and Chandler’s and his sister’s bedroom was infested with mice and animal feces.
Whaley says the mother told investigators she put her children to bed between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. When she checked on them several hours later, she found Chandler unresponsive under the dresser and called 911.
An autopsy showed Chandler died of compressional asphyxia. Each time he exhaled, the pressure of the dresser increased, restricting his breathing.
