Charleston man stabbed to death in Illinois

Robert S. Heitbrink, 48, of Jacksonville, Ill., was charged him with murder after William G. McElhaney, 70, of Charleston was found stabbed to death in Illinois Saturday.

A Charleston man was stabbed to death in Jacksonville, Ill., early Saturday.

William G. McElhaney, 70, was found lying in a pool of blood at a home located at 37 Ivywood Drive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.

Police arrested Robert S. Heitbrink, 48, and charged him with murder. Heitbrink and McElhaney were related to each other, according to a press release. Further details about their relationship have not been released. A Jacksonville Police Department representative could not immediately be reached.

Heitbrink was expected to appear in court Monday afternoon, according to a report by the State Journal-Register in Springfield.

Heitbrink is a well-known Jacksonville real estate agent, according to the Jacksonville Journal-Courier’s report on the killing. Heitbrink is the president of the Jacksonville chapter of the Illinois Association of Realtors, according to the association’s website.

The coroner stated McElhaney had been stabbed several times, according to the newspaper’s report.
