Driver who died in Highway 61 wreck identifed

A West Ashley man died early Sunday when his car ran off S.C. Highway 61 and hit a tree.

Grady Garris II, 45, died at scene of his injuries, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office

The wreck happened about 3 a.m. near Magnolia Gardens, a two-lane stretch of road bordered by big oak trees.

A 2001 BMW left the road, struck a tree and overturned, Charleston County Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.

The driver, the only occupant of the car, died in the crash.

The crash is under investigation by the sheriff’s office traffic division.
