A fire at a Summerville apartment building displaced residents of seven units Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to Somerset Apartment Homes on Boone Hill Road about 11 a.m. One of the eight units was empty, and the other seven sustained smoke and water damage. The exterior of the building did not appear to be damaged.

The fire started between the walls, and the cause is under investigation, Summerville Fire Chief Richard Waring said.

Red Cross volunteers helped residents who needed a place to stay find temporary housing. Volunteers also gave them money to replace food and clothes and referrals to other agencies.
