Tree in the middle of downtown Charleston street another curiosity for visitors
A truck knocked a tree into the middle of Meeting Street Wednesday evening, blocking traffic in three lanes and generating another attraction for both tourists and residents.
The tree in front of 268 Meeting St. fell into the street during rush hour, blocking the northbound lanes between Society and Wentworth streets for several hours. A southbound lane was also closed because of the limbs.
The sidewalk around the base of the tree was broken up, but there no apparent damage to the adjacent building, although some electrical wires appeared to be knocked loose.
Police waited several hours for somebody to show up and start removing the tree, while dozens of pedestrians snapped photos on their cell phones and cameras.
A police spokesman said a tractor trailer hit the tree around 5 p.m.
More details on the accident were not available Wednesday night.
