The main runway at Charleston International Airport is set to open at 9 a.m. Aug. 7, according to an Air Force spokesman.
It was set to open this week, but excessive rains over the past few months have hampered construction, said Capt. Frank Hartnett of Joint Base Charleston.
“From talking with the construction crews, it’s difficult for them to use heavy machinery on saturated ground,” he said.
A small ceremony will mark the occasion and more details will be released later, Hartnett said.
The 9,000-foot runway has been undergoing a complete makeover over the past 12 or so months. The reconstruction has not interfered with airport operations.
