Moped driver killed in wreck on Highway 61, deputies say

A moped driver was struck by a sport utility vehicle and killed in a wreck early Monday, Charleston County sheriff’s deputies said.

The wreck happened about 12:05 a.m. on Highway 61, about four miles north of the Village Green subdivision, Maj. Jim Brady said.

A Saturn SUV rear ended the moped, then left the road and struck a tree, Brady said.

The moped’s driver received fatal injuries in the wreck. Paramedics transported the SUV’s driver to Medical University Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, Brady said.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office did not release the identity of the person who was killed Tuesday.

Charleston County’s Traffic Division is investigating the incident, Brady said.
