Former S.C. state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel was arrested Monday in East Hampton, N.Y., on charges of driving drunk, according to the East Hampton Star newspaper.
East Hampton Village police said they saw Ravenel swerving across lane lines and driving on the shoulder of the road. The paper said Ravenel refused to take a breath test at the police station.
Ravenel’s attorney told the judge his client, a multimillionaire developer and son of a former U.S. congressman, was in East Hampton playing polo.
Ravenel’s bond was set at $650.
Ravenel, R-Charleston, resigned as state treasurer in 2007 and pleaded guilty to cocaine possession, serving time in federal prison.
Most recently, Ravenel, who is doing a reality TV show for the Bravo network, has hinted he was considering a run for U.S. Senate against fellow Republican Lindsey Graham.
