A Johns Island man who told police he returned fire in a North Charleston gunfight that fatally wounded a man has been charged with murder.
Police who responded to reports of shots fired on Ferrara Drive found Derrick McKinley, 25, walking on nearby Accabee Road with a handgun in his possession.
In addition to murder, McKinley was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Dashawn Zellars, 21, of North Charleston. Zellars died of a single gunshot wound, said Deputy Coroner Scott Ramsey.
People gathered at the scene of the shooting Saturday afternoon declined comment. A man with a cane pointed to a place in the street where Zellars lay after being shot. Another man grieved loudly while talking on the phone about the shooting.
McKinley told police that he and Zellars along with two other people got into an argument. McKinley said he went to his car to get his gun after Zellars fired at him, police said.
Zellars was found next to a parked vehicle when officers responded to the 1 a.m. call in the 2600 block of Ferrara Drive. He was transported to Medical University Hospital where he died.
The incident remains under investigation, police said.
