•Mini of Charleston team wins big up north•
On one of the best known sports car tracks, a Mini Cooper driven by a Charleston-based team was in top form even as rough weather crashed all around.
“The same rain that swamped the entire East Coast last week created some steamy conditions and hot racing action at Lime Rock Park,” said Brad Davis, driver for the Mini of Charleston racing team.
The Pirelli World Challenge Series held races at the park on the long Fourth of July weekend. Lime Rock is a 1.53 mile road course two hours outside New York City in Lakeville, Conn.
Davis’s son Robbie Davis, behind the wheel of the Mini of Charleston/Mini USA/Mini Financial Services Mini Cooper, won his first Pirelli World Challenge TCB race.
He qualified in fourth place for the initial Thursday 25 minute sprint race but eventually caught two Minis in front to win. Mini Coopers placed 1-2-3 in the race.
“In the second sprint race, Davis grabbed the class lead at the start and stayed out in front for a flag to flag win and his second PWC win,” according to his father. Mini again swept the podium positions.
In the final Lime Rock Park race, Davis was on the front row for the start. But after challenging for the lead, he developed tire problems that made the Mini hard to handle. He spun twice late in the race and finished eighth, Brad Davis said.
Still, Robbie Davis and the Mini of Charleston team moved up to the Championship points lead. Today, the Pirelli series takes place alongside the Indy Cars in the Streets of Toronto race.
Meanwhile, the Davis’ were awarded trophies as class champions in the SCCA Nationals Majors Tour, Eastern Conference season finale at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Both also clinched SCCA Southeast Division championships. Brad Davis drives in the H Production class and Robbie Davis in B Spec.
