MUSC board names interim president to temporarily fill role during search for Greenberg’s replacement

The Medical University Board of Trustees has named Mark Sothmann as the interim president of the university while the board searches to permanently replace MUSC President Ray Greenberg.

Sothmann is the vice president for academic affairs and university provost.

Greenberg announced Wednesday morning that he will leave MUSC in late August for a position within the University of Texas health care system.

The board of trustees held an executive session Wednesday afternoon to pick Sothmann as the interim president.

“Dr. Sothmann has proven his ability to lead here at MUSC, first in his role as the dean of the College of Health Professions and then in his current position as provost,” board Chairman Tom Stephenson said in a press release about the appointment. “The Board has every confidence that Mark will provide a steady leadership presence during this period of transition for the University.”

Stephenson said the board will likely take several months to pick a permanent replacement.
