Clothes on sale after the Fourth
The passing of Independence Day marks the beginning of the end for the retail industry’s summer season. This weekend, stores will begin moving those sundresses, sandals and tank tops to the sale racks to make room for their fall collections.
Retail prices will continue to decline throughout the month, but if you hit the stores early, you’ll have a better chance of finding the right sizes and styles for all the best prices.
Shops around town
Since many local boutiques have smaller inventories, you’re better off shopping their sales first thing in the morning this weekend. Copper Penny and its sister shoe store, Shooz, will have their annual July 5th sale, where you can find designer garb for up to 70 percent off.
Another one of my favorite end-of-season sales is at Urban Outfitters, where you can find funky shoes, jewelry, seasonal clothes and even home decor for up to 50 percent off. Even if you tend to shy away from the store’s flair for uniqueness, you can find modest items such as blouses and basics among its sale.
You can also save up to 50 percent off on high-end resort wear during Lacoste’s semi-annual sale, which ends next Friday.
An obvious deal you’re likely to find this weekend is on swimwear. Some of the swimsuits at Target will be on sale for up to 25 percent off until Saturday. Victoria’s Secret usually starts marking down its swim inventory in June, and you can still find marked-down swimsuits throughout the rest of the summer.
Earlier this summer, I heard Kmart had some pretty cute swimwear in stock this year. I haven’t seen it for myself, but since it’s 50 percent off this weekend, I’ll have to check it out.
If you’re shopping at national retail chains, check out the deals at the Tanger Outlets first. Most of the merchandise at there is already cheaper than it is at the main stores, so the marked-down prices yield savings upon savings.
Several name-brand retailers are offering storewide sales at the outlets. Merchandise will be 50 percent off at J.Crew and Ann Taylor, 40 percent off at Old Navy and 30 percent off at Polo Ralph Lauren. At Gap, the 50 percent off sale includes everything in the store, even all new merchandise.
There’s a good chance that this is just the tip of the iceberg, as far as deals go. Some stores haven’t been advertising their after-holiday sales, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t having them. Get to the stores and see what you can find on sale before everyone else does.
