Charleston-area veterans job fair hosted by VA to be held Aug. 8

Charleston’s Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center will hold its annual job fair aimed specifically at veterans on Aug. 8 in North Charleston.

It is the same job fair that previously has been held aboard the aircraft carrier Yorktown at Patriots Point, but this year it has been moved to a new venue because of the need for expanded space.

“Welcome Home 2013” is being billed as a chance for area employers to interview and hire an already trained workforce.

The event begins at 9 a.m. that day at the Charleston Area Convention Center with a workshop that focuses on resume writing, tips for successfully navigating through job fairs, military skills translation, and interviewing.

The rest of the fair starts at 10 a.m. and will go until 1 p.m. The free event is open to all veterans, current service members and their families.

“When veterans leave the military, the first thing they need is a good job, and we are offering companies a great way to meet and hire them,” said event coordinator Jan Bolger, who also serves as the seamless transition manager at the VA.

“Veterans offer the qualities employers are looking for — a strong work ethic, ability to work as part of a highly motivated team, leadership, and technical skills,” she added.
