Five men charged with murder in slaying of Walterboro mother

Colleton County deputies load Deon Hampton for transport to jail after serving him with a murder warrant Tuesday.

Five Colleton County men have been charged with murder after a mother of three was shot to death in her driveway in April.

Brandon Allen Bowman, 28, of Colleton Loop in Walterboro; Carl Crandell Scriven, 29, of Bee Drive in Walterboro; Deon Hampton, 28, of Breland Street in Walterboro; Jason Charles Wilson, 29, of White Hall Road in Yemassee; and Reginald Shontez Fryar, 24, of Wiley Street in Walterboro were all charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, Colleton County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ted Stanfield said.

Rebecca Marshelle Dewitte, 34, a mother of three, was killed by gunfire April 9 while she sat in her driveway after returning from the store on West Side Lane near Walterboro. Investigators said occupants of two cars were shooting at each other and struck Dewitte.

The five men were arrested April 15 and charged with attempted murder after investigators said they shot at each other. Sheriff Ray Strickland said at the time that he would press for murder charges in connection with Dewitte’s death.
