New elephant Bozie to join National Zoo
WASHINGTON — A new Asian elephant is being introduced to the other elephants at the National Zoo and will begin sharing the same living space.
Officials say 37-year-old Bozie joined the zoo’s two other females last week in the elephant community center.
Bozie arrived in May from the Baton Rouge Zoo in Louisiana. She was placed on a 30-day quarantine. In recent days, curators moved Bozie gradually closer to the other females to introduce them.
Now they have formed a new herd.
Natural Bridge studied for park designation
ROANOKE, Va. — The National Park Service has agreed to study the possibility of turning Natural Bridge into a national park.
The federal agency responded to Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s recent request for the study. The Roanoke-area congressman suggested that private funds be used and that a conservation easement be placed on adjoining property to protect it from development.
The Roanoke Times reported that the park service will soon begin a reconnaissance survey of the Rockbridge County landmark. No timeline was given on when that process would begin or how long it would take.
The privately owned, 215- foot-high geological landmark recently was put up for sale.
Quarter to honor Great Basin National Park
LAS VEGAS — Great Basin National Park is the latest star in a series of specialty U.S. quarters.
The back of the quarter features a picture of a bristlecone pine tree emerging from rocky ground, with the name of the park emblazoned above the picture. The coin entered into circulation earlier this month.
Great Basin is in east-central Nevada, near the Utah border. It was established in 1986 and draws about 100,000 visitors each year. It’s known for its ancient forests and prime stargazing conditions.
