AIKEN, S.C. -- Pepperidge Farm is closing its bakery in Aiken, eliminating the jobs of 115 employees.
Bill Livingstone with Pepperidge Farm says the company needs to adjust to changing market conditions and remain competitive.
Livingston says the company has determined it has excess capacity in its network of bakeries. He says the Aiken plant has good workers but it has limited capacity.
Livingston also says the company decided to phase out a product line that accounted for much of the Aiken operation’s work.
The bakery began operations in 1976. Reductions will begin in September and run through March.
Most of the work done in Aiken is moving to Lakeland, Fla.
The company says it will offer affected employees a comprehensive severance package.
