A 41-year-old woman is accused of embezzling $144,725 while working for the Orangeburg County Treasurer’s Office, authorities said.
Vickie L. Haynes of New Wilkinson Avenue in Orangeburg is charged with embezzling more than $10,000 in public funds, according to the State Law Enforcement Division, whose agents arrested her Thursday.
If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine.
Haynes is accused of stealing money while working at the office between April 2012 and Jan. 14, an arrest affidavit stated.
She served in a position of trust and was responsible for receiving payments from citizens, the affidavit stated. Haynes, who had an annual salary of $23,507, allegedly deposited the stolen money into her personal bank account during the eight-month period, SLED said.
Haynes reportedly then wrote checks from her personal account and her son’s bank account in an attempt to cover the stolen money, the affidavit stated.
Haynes was booked into the Orangeburg County jail.
