Taste and vote on your favorite heirloom tomato dish or drink
For heirloom tomato aficionados, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.
If you’ve never tasted an heirloom, it’s a good time to find out what all the drooling is about.
To that end, and to support the farmers who grow them, Limehouse Produce has developed an awareness campaign/contest on Facebook in conjunction with local restaurants. “The Charleston Heirloom Tomato Trek” is running through July 12.
Chefs and bartenders at participating restaurants are featuring heirloom tomatoes — full size or cherry — in dishes and drinks. Patrons are encouraged to vote on their favorite here.
The person whose dish or drink has the most votes in each category will receive 100 pounds of tomatoes from Limehouse and a special tomato trophy.
Diners who order the featured dish or drink can take a photo of it and submit it online. One of those diners will be randomly selected to receive a gift certificate to the winning restaurant from online voting.
To date, participating restaurants are FIG, Carter’s Kitchen, Queen Anne’s Revenge, Peninsula Grill, Rivertowne Club, Old Village Post House, Trattoria Lucca, Slightly North of Broad and High Cotton.
Local farmers producing the tomatoes are Thackeray Farm and Rosebank Farms. The tomato varieties are (full size) Mortgage Lifter, Pink Brandywine, Yellow Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Green Zebra, Mr. Stripey and Pineapple; (cherry) Sungold, Chocolate, Yellow Pears and Sweet 100s.
