Tomato campaign

It is heirloom tomato season, and Limehouse Produce has created a special awareness campaign to promote the availability of this Southern staple.

The Charleston Heirloom Tomato Trek will run through July 12 with the goal of promoting information about these special tomato varieties, the farmers who grow them and the chefs who cook with them.

As part of the campaign, restaurants, chefs and bartenders are featuring heirloom tomatoes, full size or cherry, at their establishments in a number of dishes and drinks.

Patrons can get involved and vote on their favorite posted item at tinyurl.com/mmm66c6. The person whose dish or drink has the most votes in each category will receive 100 pounds of tomatoes from Limehouse Produce and a special tomato trophy to display.

Diners are encouraged to go to the participating restaurants during the campaign and order the featured dish or drink. Once they order, they can take a photo and submit it online. One lucky patron will be randomly selected to receive a gift certificate to the winning restaurant from online voting.

Farmers producing the prized heirlooms are Thackeray Farm’s “Wadmalaw Fuglies” and Rosebank Farms.

Restaurants involved in the campaign, as of June 24, include Carter’s Kitchen, Queen Anne’s Revenge, Peninsula Grill, Rivertowne Club, Old Village Post House, Trattoria Lucca, Slightly North of Broad and High Cotton.

Diner appreciation

Fat Hen will host a sixth anniversary Moonshine Dinner 6-9 p.m. July 7. Chef-owner Fred Neuville has designed the event as a way to thank his loyal diners for their patronage.

Beginning at 6 p.m., guests can sample local dishes from four different food-stations throughout the restaurant.

Specialty cocktails using Firefly Distillery’s newest line of Moonshine will be paired with each station.

Guests will enjoy dishes such as a roasted pork butt, BBQ chicken sliders with bacon blue cheese coleslaw, shrimp and grits and a community farmer’s table offering smoked, pickled, roasted and grilled vegetables, fruits and cheeses.

Tickets are $40, plus tax, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Lowcountry Lab Rescue, an organization from which Neuville and his wife, Joan, have adopted several of their dogs.

Fourth at the mansion

It’s time for the eighth annual Sizzling Southern Celebration on July 4.

Join Wentworth Mansion and Circa 1886 in celebrating Independence Day in true Southern fashion with libations and delicacies hot off the grill, all accompanied by live music.

After dark, guests will head to the mansion’s cupola with panoramic views of the city to watch Charleston’s fireworks display.

The cost is $70, excluding tax, gratuity and additional beverages (a glass of champagne is included).

Edible accolades

The awards continue to stream into the Holy City.

Paige Young of P.I.E. Bake Shoppe, 5 Warren St., received a “Best Deli Sandwich in America” award from Restaurant Hospitality Magazine for her ham, blueberry chutney and wasabi mustard sandwich.

Fields to fermentation

The Cocktail Club is conducting a class 11 a.m.-1 p.m. July 13 using ingredients “foraged” from the Charleston farmers market that morning. The cost is $50.

Chef Patrick Owens has announced a new summer menu at Opal Restaurant and Bar featuring the foods of California and the Mediterranean.

Indigo Road has announced an early August opening for their Italian tavern Indaco, which means “indigo” in Italian.

Steve Palmer and General Manager Andy Fallon of The Macintosh have brought Robert Berry on board as chef. Berry has cooked at Slightly North of Broad, and Cookshop and West End Brewery in New York.

Garten gets planted

Signs are up for the East Bay Street Biergarten at 549 East Bay St. in the former Rice Market restaurant location. A fall opening is planned.
