New Colleton County deputies carrying out their dreams

Three Colleton County deputies graduated from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy last week, and they all have interesting back stories.

Hallie Wright, 22, is a graduate of Charleston Southern University and mother of an 8-month-old girl. She’s a Colleton County native and wanted to be in law enforcement as long as she could remember, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Ted Stanfield.

Kevin Smalls, 29, is single. His father, Trooper Bruce Smalls, was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 27, 1985, on Interstate 95 in Jasper County. Kevin Smalls was only 2 then and wants to carry on his father’s legacy, according to Stanfield.

Kenny Smith, 33, has three children, 8, 5 and 3. His father, a carpenter, is a reserve officer candidate starting training with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

All three deputies were recognized for completing a three-mile run during training in under 25 minutes. Wright won a Distinguished Graduate award for a grade above 96.
