MOUNT PLEASANT — Game On, owned by Bubba Roof and captained by Trey McMillan, released a blue marlin early Thursday to earn the top spot in the Carolina Billfish Classic being fished out of Toler’s Cove Marina and Georgetown Landing.
Only 13 of 32 boats entered in the tournament elected to use Thursday as one of their two fishing days with the tournament continuing through Saturday.
Four billfish were released — blue marlin by Game On and Big Sky, and sailfish by Legacy and Jabez.
The tournament is the third of five events that comprise the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series. Boats score 600 points for blue marlin releases, 300 for white marlin releases, 200 for sailfish releases and one point per pound for blue marlin that are weighed.
Game On leads based on the time of its release, 9:20 a.m. Big Sky, fishing out of Georgetown, released a blue marlin it estimated between 450 and 500 pounds at 10:56 a.m.
The top dolphin Thursday was a 36.60-pound catch aboard Syked Out.
