MOUNT PLEASANT — A heavy rainstorm Wednesday afternoon forced tournament officials to cancel the opening round of the Rice Planters Amateur golf tournament at Snee Farm Country Club.
More than two inches of rain fell in less than two hours, and a decision was made to cancel the day’s play.
The rain washed away several good scores, including a 6-under-par 66 by Australia’s Maverick Antcliff, a rising junior at Augusta State.
Antcliff birdied his final four holes and did not make any bogeys.
Wofford golfer Brent McKenzie and University of South Carolina golfer Will Murphy had both turned in scores of 67, while Andrew Novak of Mount Pleasant, who has signed with Wofford, was in at 68.
Golfers will start again Thursday.
The tournament will be shortened to 54 holes.
