SALUDA, S.C. -- A Saluda teen has drowned in Lake Murray while trying to swim to shore from a pontoon boat.
S.C. Department of Natural Resources Capt. Robert McCullough says the teen was on a 21-foot pontoon boat Sunday afternoon with an adult and three other teens and had almost made it to shore when he went under water.
Saluda County Coroner B. Keith Turner says the victim was 17-year-old Millard Waeland Peeples.
McCullough says two teens on the boat had jumped into the water and began having trouble. A woman on the boat threw them a life jacket and one of them was able to grab it.
The Newberry County dive team recovered the body.
