The Battle of Secessionville was fought on James Island as the Union tried to take Charleston, but was turned back by the Confederates.

Charleston native DuBose Heyward dies in Tryon, N.C., at the age of 54. His novel “Porgy” was the basis for “Porgy and Bess,” the renowned operatic play. “Porgy” was set along Catfish Row in Charleston.
