More than 60,000 veterans across the country face homelessness each night, according to 2012 federal data, and a grant just awarded to the Housing Authority of the City of Charleston will help 35 of them find a place to live in the Lowcountry.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded 35 vouchers, worth a total $182,127.57 per year, to the Housing Authority.
The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center will screen candidates for the vouchers and the Housing Authority will administer the program.
The Housing Authority already helps 165 other veterans in the voucher program, said Housing Authority Director Donald Cameron.
