Charleston County GOP Chair Joe Bustos said he is resigning that post at noon today, a decision that comes as some in the party questioned if he should hold that job and run for Mount Pleasant mayor at the same time.
Bustos sent out an email this morning, saying, “effective 12 p.m. today, I am resigning from the Charleston County Chairmanship. The personal attacks and rancor is too divisive.”
Former County GOP Chair Mark Hartley said he was going to ask the party’s executive committee tonight to consider a rule making it not possible to run for election, even to a nonpartisan post, while holding the chairmanship.
Currently, party chairs cannot seek partisan posts.
Bustos decision comes two days after —but is not related to —the decision for S.C. GOP Chair Chad Connelly to resign. The party met Saturday and elected its former executive director Matt Moore, who recently has worked for U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., to replace him. Connelly has taken a position at the Republican National Committee.
