A Charleston County airport committee voted unanimously Monday to create a new position for terminal redevelopment.
On a 4-0 vote, the Human Resources Committee recommended Charleston County Aviation Authority add the job of deputy director of terminal redevelopment starting July 1.
The duties have been handled by Jim Fann, deputy director of engineering and planning. He will retire June 30 but has expressed interest in the new position if the full board creates it at its next meeting June 20.
Airport staff said the agency has promoted staff members to new positions in the past, but board member Teddie Pryor said he believed the job should be advertised. Attorney Arnold Goodstein said he believed it was proper to promote from within for the job, but he said he would have a legal opinion by the board meeting.
Also, the panel deferred action on Airports Director Sue Stevens’ salary while it waits for more information.
Stevens currently earns $211,140 a year. The 26-year-employee received a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment in September for the first time in two years.
