Weather could be a factor in the number of participants sailing in the 51st Hobcaw Yacht Club Regatta, the beginning of the summer regatta season in Charleston.
Summer Regatta Schedule
Hobcaw YC Regatta June 8-9
James Island YC Regatta June 15-16
Charleston YC Regatta July 20-21
Carolina YC Regatta July 27-28
Rockville Regatta Aug. 3-4
“We anticipate anywhere from 65 to 100 boats. If everybody thinks it’s going to be nasty all day, some of our out-of-towners won’t show,” said J.D. Rosser, a past commodore who will be one of the Principal Race Officers at this year’s regatta.
Registration will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at Hobcaw Yacht Club, located at 180 Hobcaw Drive in Mount Pleasant, and will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Rosser said the first of five races — three Saturday and two Sunday — is expected to begin around 1 p.m. There are three courses on the Wando River, a youth course at Hobcaw Yacht Club, a second further up the river and the third near the I-526 bridge.
One of the highlights will be the Holder 14 Class World Championship, a fleet Hobcaw has adopted. Rosser said he also expects a good turnout for the Sea Island One Designs. Other classes include Optimists, 420s, Lightnings, Lasers, Sunfish and Snipes. The club also presents the Michelle Poulnot Award to the top female sailor.
Hobcaw Yacht Club commodore Jim Posda said special events are being planned.
“We’re the first guys out of the gate, which is always fun for us,” Posda said. “We’re going to have some of the old-timers come back, which is cool, and we’re going to have some of the really neat boats. We’re expecting some fun times as always on the Wando River.”
