The Charleston District of the Army Corps of Engineers announced that Lt. Col. John T. Litz will take leadership of the federal agency when Lt. Col. Edward P. Chamberlayne ends his term this summer.
District commanders stay at a post for two year stints.
Chamberlayne, a native of Alexandria, Va., will be ending his term this summer and taking a post at the Pentagon.
The Army Corps of Engineers has peppered local newspaper headlines in recent years due to the local maritime community’s plans to dredge Charleston Harbor an additional five feet for to better accommodate larger vessels planned from an expanded Panama Canal in 2015.
The Corps is currently conducting a $13 million feasibility study as part of the initial steps for the planned $300 million deepening of Charleston Harbor. The federal agency is scheduled to make its recommendation to Congress in 2015.
