AUGUSTA — Augusta GreenJackets starter Justin Schumer held the Charleston RiverDogs offense to four hits in his seven innings as Augusta topped the RiverDogs, 8-1, Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium in South Atlantic League baseball.
The RiverDogs (32-21) stayed tied for first atop the Southern Division with Savannah.
Charleston’s only serious threats against Augusta (30-25) came in the second and fourth innings.
In the second, Peter O’Brien and Dante Bichette Jr. had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Reymond Nunez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Jose Rosario grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the fourth, Taylor Dugas doubled and Nunez walked, and Danny Oh had an RBI single for the RiverDogs’ only run.
Charleston starter Evan Rutckyj (5-3) went 52/3 innings, allowing five runs on a season-high 10 hits. He walked three and struck out three.
Augusta starter Justin Schumer (2-4) went a season-high seven innings for the win. Jesus Galindo went 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs for the GreenJackets.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. today at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Charleston sends right-hander Vicente Campos (1-1, 4.45 ERA) against right-hander Chris Stratton (6-2, 3.13).
