Folly Beach Anglers schedule Take A Kid Fishing Day
If history is any indication, the Folly Beach Anglers can expect almost 200 youngsters to participate in its fifth annual Take a Kid Fishing Day tournament June 15 at the Folly Beach Pier.
“The tournament is Father’s Day weekend, so we really expect a good turnout,” said club member Daniel Culpepper.
“We’ve experienced ... growth every year. The first year we had 53, the next year 81, we had 111 our third year and last year, we had over 160. That doesn’t include about 40 volunteers or the adults that came with the kids.”
The 9 a.m. event is free to youths 16 and under, and registration is not required. Categories for both boys and girls are 6-under, 7-11 and 12-16. Trophies and prizes will be awarded in all age groups, and rods and reels and bait will be provided on a first-come basis.
Anglers catch a variety of species, mostly whiting and bluefish. Culpepper said the first two years the big fish prize went for black drum. A small, 14-ounce whiting won the third year, while a 3-pound, 7-ounce flounder was brought to the scales in last year’s event.
“That turned out to be the biggest flounder of the year on the pier,” Culpepper said.
Sharks and stingrays are not eligible. In previous years, anglers have landed a guitarfish, a member of the ray family, and a cownose ray.
