Cesar Vargas and two relievers combined for 14 strikeouts and a five-hit shutout as Charleston defeated last-place Greenville, 6-0, in South Atlantic League baseball Saturday night at Riley Park in front of 4,972 fans.
Peter O’Brien went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI for the RiverDogs (28-18), who remained in first place in the Southern Division with the win over Greenville (14-34).
Vargas (2-2) went five innings before Phil Wetherell and Alex Smith went two innings each to complete the shutout.
With a 1- 0 lead, Charleston put the game away with five runs in the sixth. O’Brien doubled and scored on an error. With the bases loaded, Jake Cave hit a single to score De Leon. Reymond Nunez scored on a Claudio Custodio single, Dante Bichette Jr. walked with the bases loaded to score Fu-Lin Kuo, and in O’Brien’s second at bat of the inning, he singled to make it 6-0.
Bichette went 0-4 as his 10-game hitting streak ended.
It was the 10th Annual Run Forrest Run 5K with 712 participants participating in the race before the game.
The final game of the series is at 5:05 p.m. today. Right-hander Rafael De Paula (5-2, 2.38 ERA) starts for Charleston against RHP Frank Montas (1-4, 5.08). There will be free parking, Kid’s Club members get in for free, and all kids 12 and under get a coupon for a free hot dog, Pepsi and chips. Also, bring your dog for Dog Day. There is pregame catch on the field, and after the game there will be autographs with the entire RiverDogs team.
